Two numbers matter, and retailers do not always make it obvious which one they are listing. Overall depth is the measurement from the front of the seat cushion to the back of the frame. Seat depth is the usable part: from the front edge of the cushion to the face of the back cushion. A sofa can have a 40-inch overall depth and a 22-inch seat depth, or the same overall depth and a 26-inch seat depth, and those two sofas will feel completely different.
Seat depth and how you sit
For most adults, a seat depth around 21 to 23 inches supports an upright posture with feet flat on the floor. Between 23 and 26 inches feels relaxed and works well for people who tuck their legs up or lean into the back. Beyond about 26 inches, the sofa is really designed for lounging: comfortable for stretching out, less comfortable for sitting up to talk or work. Neither end is wrong, but it helps to be honest about which one describes your living room most evenings.
If you already own a sofa you like, measure its seat depth before shopping. That number is a far more reliable guide than any product description.
Overall depth and the room
Overall depth is a floor-plan question. A deeper sofa pushes further into the room, and the walkway in front of it is where you will feel that. Aim to keep roughly 30 to 36 inches clear along the main path through the space, and 14 to 18 inches between the sofa front and the coffee table. In a narrow room, a 36- to 38-inch overall depth often makes the difference between a room that circulates and one that does not.
Cushion fill changes the answer
Listed seat depth assumes the cushion holds its shape. Soft, feather-wrapped cushions compress as you sit, which effectively deepens the seat by an inch or two; firm foam holds the listed dimension more closely. If a sofa is at the top of your comfortable range on paper, a softer fill may push it past it.
A simple way to decide
- Measure the seat depth of a sofa you find comfortable and note whether you sit upright or lounge on it.
- Check the walkway you will have left after subtracting the sofa's overall depth from the room.
- Compare listed seat depth against your reference number, adjusting for cushion fill.
- Confirm the piece will fit through doorways and stairwells on the delivery path.
Depth is the dimension that determines whether a sofa is lived on or merely sat on. Getting it right is usually worth more than any choice of fabric or leg style.
